This summer, Opera San José’s Opera Academy offers an immersive training experience designed for high school students ages 14 – 18 looking to refine their vocal technique and stage presence. Held in the Heiman Digital Studio at Opera San José, the program provides expert coaching, masterclasses, and performance opportunities led by esteemed industry professionals. Through hands-on training and mentorship, participants will develop their artistic expression in a supportive and inspiring environment.
This Academy is designed to give aspiring artists a spring board to the next level: whether that’s applying for colleges, auditioning professionally, snagging the lead in the next school production, or becoming the next YouTube sensation. It’s your time. This is your moment!

What you can expect from the Opera Academy
- Movement Class – Explore physical storytelling and character embodiment through exercises that enhance strength, flexibility, and stage presence.
- Stage Combat – Learn the fundamentals of safe, effective stage combat, developing precision, control, and dramatic intention in choreographed fight sequences.
- Individual Voice Lessons & Vocal Coachings – Receive personalized instruction to refine vocal technique, expand repertoire, and deepen musical interpretation.
- Scenework – Rehearse and perform scenes focusing on character relationships, dramatic arc, and ensemble collaboration.
- Acting Classes – Develop a deeper understanding of character, intention, and emotional truth through acting exercises and scene study.
- Text Analysis Classes – Unpack the nuances of dramatic and musical texts to enhance performance choices and deepen storytelling.
- Masterclass – Engage in high-level coaching sessions with industry professionals, gaining insight and practical feedback in a public learning environment.
- Recital – Showcase your growth and artistry in a culminating performance featuring prepared repertoire for an audience.
