A favorite with Opera San José audiences, J. Raymond Meyers returns
this season to sing the role of
Prunier in the company premiere of La rondine. Most
recently, Mr. Meyers appeared as
Giles Corey in OSJ's The Crucible (2005 - 2006) and
Alfred in Die
Fledermaus (2003 - 2004).
The versatile West
Coast tenor has sung roles ranging from Verdi to Weill with many
other stops along the way. Over the past five years, Mr. Meyers has
turned his attention to the leading roles of the lyric stage,
appearing as The Duke (Rigoletto,) Pinkerton (Madama
Butterfly,) Ferrando (Così fan tutte,) Rodolfo
(La bohème,)
Hoffmann (The
Tales of Hoffmann,) Ernesto (Don Pasquale,) Camille
(The Merry Widow,) Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi) and Alfred
in (Die Fledermaus).
Mr. Meyers has been
a frequent performer with many of America’s premiere opera
companies, performing leading and supporting roles with Anchorage
Opera, Utah Festival Opera, Portland Opera, Opera Tampa, Opera Grand
Rapids, Opera Santa Barbara, Sacramento Opera, San Francisco Lyric
Opera, West Bay Opera, Rogue Opera, Stockton Opera, Bear Valley
Music Festival, Mendocino Music Festival, Pacific Repertory Opera,
Festival Opera, Pocket Opera and many others. He has also had the
privilege to understudy several roles at San Francisco Opera.
In the past few seasons he has sung the 4th
Jew (Salome) at Toledo Opera as well as
Rodolfo (La bohème)
at Rogue Opera in Ashland, Oregon. In January 2010 he sang
Andres in Wozzeck
with Ensemble Parallèle at Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco
and will reprise the role with the Astoria Music Festival this
summer. Other recent appearances include
Trin (La Fancuilla del
West) with Opera Tampa, Goro
(Madama Butterfly) with Opera Grand Rapids, and
Beppe (I Pagliacci)
with Opera Santa Barbara.
On the concert stage, Mr. Meyers has appeared as the tenor soloist
in San Francisco Ballet's West Side Story Suite, Frederick in
Daryl Gray's The Pirates of Penzance with Ballet San Jose as
well as touring with them to China as their tenor soloist in
Carmina Burana.
In 2009, Mr. Meyers made his motion picture debut
as the opera singer
in the opera house scene in Sean Penn's Oscar
winning movie "Milk."
