Opera San José offers a variety of opera experiences designed for students K-12.  During the 2010 - 2011 season, the following programs will be offered:

One-Act Touring Opera: Hansel and Gretel

OSJ artists will present a one-act, condensed version of Engelbert Humperdinck’s classic opera Hansel and Gretel. Performed in English by OSJ’s fully-costumed singers with live piano accompaniment, Hansel and Gretel provides children with a positive experience of an artform that may be new to them, offering a fantastic introduction to opera and theatrical storytelling through music and voice. Hansel and Gretel, which lasts approximately 45 minutes long including ten minutes for Q & A, costs $350 for one performance or $500 for two, back-to-back performances and includes a study guide. To reserve your school's performance, call Outreach Coordinator Lettie Smith at (408) 437-4464 or fill out an on-line booking form after July 1, 2010.

Vocal Masterclass:
Perfect for middle school through high-school choral and musical theatre students, a resident artist will present a masterclass focusing on healthy vocal technique, breathing fundamentals and principles of good diction. For musical theatre and drama students, the presentation can be tailored to also address the topics of role preparation, stage movement and character development. Reasonably priced at $250 for a 45-minute presentation, Vocal Masterclass can be booked by calling Outreach Coordinator Lettie Smith at (408) 437-4464
or booked on-line after July 1, 2010.

Let's Make an Opera!
(15 class periods)
Here is a unique class project. Designed as an extension of Opera San José’s assemblies, this program’s goal is for a single class, or a group of about 30 students, to create, produce and perform their own original opera.

An Opera San José Resident Artist, in collaboration with a member of OSJ’s musical staff, meets with the students and their teacher two or three times weekly for approximately six weeks to create, produce and finally present the world premiere of the opera for the school community. Contact K-College Programs Coordinator Lettie Smith at 437-4464 for more information.
